Without debate, and by all accounts, music has always played a major part in the life of Johanna Sillanpaa. Originally from Borås, Sweden, she carries with her a strong and sultry voice, as she continues to make her mark on the international music scene. These days it may be rare to hear of new talent on the music scene who can write and perform in the tradition of the best contemporary musicians. Johanna Sillanpaa is one of those rare gifted singer/songwriters who has an emotional depth beyond her years and a voice that only comes along perhaps once in a century.

He encountered jazz early on while growing up in Alberta, living in a house that doubled as a rehearsal space for his guitar playing father, his bass playing brother and big band singer grandmother. Hornby has also become a gifted composer by expanding his musical tastes, studying the craft with Grammy Award winning pianist Chip Stephens, and immersing himself in the work of other great players from all over the planet. His list of collaborators is wide and wealthy, including Bob Mintzer, Ingrid Jensen, Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Tom Harrell, Jiggs Whigham.

Now that he has returned to his first love, American popular song. Johnny is armed with 6 years of jazz trio singing, and a deft musicality and approach honed by countless nights of 'shedding' as well as the original Sinatra charts. Johnny is a fresh and original entertainer, never relying on old "gags". Johnny cut his teeth trying to play swing to 20,000 kids looking to mosh and held the bar sales record at the legendary Horseshoe for a long long time. With the original team of Favourite and Hetherman, Johnny is preparing to take back his crown with less swing, more verve and jazz and a voice that is sweeter than ever.

After establishing his reputation as a volcanic, teenaged drum prodigy, Vito Rezza became a studio star. He has contributed to recordings, film scores and television and radio work with artists including Joni Mitchell, John Lee Hooker, Gino Vanelli, and Big Mama Thornton. Stephan Scheuss (Germany) - Soul Jazz

Feather light, swirling and floating in a bed of sound, melodies tinged with a bit of be-bop, a dash of soul, and a touch of r n' b, nearly provocative in their free and easy dance with the originals - and yet, always remaining true to the innate soul of the piece. Whatever the singer, songwriter and guitarist does with his favourite songs on his current solo album ONE PURE SOUL; it's simply fantastic. Bravo, Stephan Scheuss!

Lily Dahab
Wednesday Sept. 8 | 14:00h - 14:30hh | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Lily Dahab (Argentinia)- Tango Jazz Bossa Nova

Lily Dahab is a nomad between worlds and places, music and emotions. Born in Argentina and raised in the city on Rio de la Plata she studied music in Buenos Aires, recorded her first bolero album and began her career in musicals. After playing the lead role in Cats and appearing in Alan Parker´s film Evita alongside Madonna, Lily moved to Spain for nine years landing numerous leading parts, including the gypsy Esmeralda in the contemporary stage musical version of Victor Hugo´s Notre Dame de Paris in Barcelona - the same role played by the Israeli singer Noa in Paris. Love and the completely open, lively and buzzing music scene in Berlin brought Lily to Germany. She shares a longing for Buenos Aires with Astor Piazzolla, who, like her, lived away from his homeland for a long time, while enjoying a common love of the Mediterranean world with the great Spanish composer Joan Manuel Serrat. With the bolero, she gives the South American approach to life of the 1940s and 50s a very personal perspective while enjoying the freshness of the Brazilian sound through the music of Jobim and Djavan. And with the pianist Bene Aperdannier her music meets jazz, creating a fascinating and subtle bridge between the different styles. Europe meets South America, Berlin meets Buenos Aires.

Maria Markesini
Wednesday Sept. 8 | 19.30h - 20:15h | frannz Club
(Thursday Sept. 9 | 16:00h - 16:30h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport)

Maria Markesini (Griechenland) - Modern Jazz

Maria Markesini was born in one of Greece's most beautiful islands, Kefalonia, where music has played a major role for centuries, an island with a strong Italian influence, home to countless musicians, poets and artists. Music, and theater, remained her main interests throughout childhood. At the age of fourteen, she joined the Athens Conservatory, where she studied classical piano. In 1988, she joined the Music Academy of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where she graduated as a piano soloist and post graduated at the Royal Music Academy of Brussels. Through appearances with recitals on television Maria's audience continued to broaden. An unexpected arm injury would change things for Maria forever! Forced to cancel a piano recital, she proposed to the disappointed audience that she sing jazz instead. The overwhelming response she received that night was such that she knew: a new start in her career. A musician with a great spectrum of styles, colors and expressive levels had been born! Her unique sound moves between traditional and modern jazz, to folk, gospel and chanson. In Berlin she will play with Pianist Mike del Ferro. www.mariamarkesini.com

Farmers Market
Wednesday Sept. 8 | 20.30h - 0:00h | frannz Club
Norwegian Label Night

Farmers Market - Speed Balkan Boogie

Farmers Market's music is a mixture of Bulgarian folklore, jazz, pop music and humour. The band first started as a free jazz quintet but they quickly discovered their common interest in Bulgarian folklore with its oriental spectrum, its odd numbered beat and its exceptional possibilities for jamming. Farmers Market is one of Norway's most popular live bands and they not only perform at jazz festivals but also at rock and world music festivals. Their compositions and arrangements are sparkling with musical esprit: They are a musical journey to the Balkans with side trips to all musical regions of occidential pop music. Fragments of different styles and songs are combined so skilfully that a side by side of ABBA and Beethoven doesn't seem artificial at all but just ingeniously hilarious. www.farmers-market.net

Beady Belle
Wednesday Sept. 8 | 20.30h - 0:00h | frannz Club

Beady Belle - Vocal Groove Jazz

In the end of the 90s Beady Belle became an insider tip due to their new sound full of soul and jazz, elastic grooves somewhere between energetic house, relaxed funk and artful appeals to drum 'n' bass. In a playful way their music created a connection between the club music of the 90s and intelligent popsongs with a jazzy tune. Beady Belle are the Norwegian singer Beate S. Lech and the bassist Marius Reksjø, who have been in a long-time musical partnership. A short time ago the drummer Erik Holm joined the band as a permanent member. Beady Belle have already developed from an insider tip of the Norwegian underground scene to a well-established band in the international music scene. With their fourth album "Belvedere" Beady Belle set off to musically more soft tunes and surprise with occasional side trips to Nashville. On "Belvedere" one cannot notice any of the Nordic coldness which is typical for many other artists of the Norwegian nujazz scene, especially not during their stunning dynamic performances.

Elephant9
Wednesday Sept. 8 | 20.30h - 0:00h | frannz Club
Norwegian Label Night

Elephant9 - Progressive Jazz Rock

Excellent new trio consisting of Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent, Humcrush) on keyboards, Nikolai Eilertsen (The National Bank) on bass and Torstein Lofthus (Shining) on drums. Storløkken mostly concentrating on organ and electric piano gives the album a late sixtees, early seventees flavour with traces of rock, jazz, prog and psychedelia. The rock solid rhythm section gives it all a contemporary edge and we get an extremely tight little unit with a high degree of great musicianship as well as pure joy in their playing. Already a firm live favourite on the Norwegian scene for a couple of years due to a handful of highly energetic and enthusiastically received concerts, they have transfered their live promise to the recording studio with ease. The all analogue recording from Grand Sport Studios in Oslo gives it a gorgeous, organic late sixties, early seventees feel combining elements from rock, jazz, psychedelia, funk and prog. Simply fantastic stuff and highly recommended.

Art Zentral
Thursday Sept. 9 | 13:00h - 13:30h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Pegelia Gold & Art Zentral (Germany) - Experimental Vocal Jazz

(Beate Sampson)

Humour and high-class Jazz as well as Pop arrangements run like a thread through the concerts of the band. "Jazzclub" is the current show which combines beautiful Jazz ballads with highly energetic bass and beat sounds. The new show "on vocation" is a musical short break through the most different facets of Jazz from Charlie Parker to Sting. At the International A Cappella Competition Graz (A) 2008 and at the Taiwan Contemporary A Cappella Competition 2009 tonalrausch's very unique and lively style won the first prize. Baby Bonk (Germany) - Modern Jazz Pop

Kalle Kalima - Gitarre, Vocals
Martin Klingeberg - Trompete, Tenorhorn, Leadvocals, Electronics
Michael Griener Schlagzeug, Vocals

Baby Bonk leads jazz beyond the postmodern, and back to the starting blocks of Dadaism. Everything is allowed as long as it is amusing. With the pleasure of a thief, the band breaks all of the rules of good taste. Brilliant playing and years of experience with countless ensembles in Germany and elsewhere, allows the musicians a recklessness, whose exuberance seeks it´s match. Urban burlesques, rude political commentaries, modest improprieties, forbidden guitar solos, glamour, improvised madness, and the simple-minded afterwork flair of a men´s glee club- all of this comes together in a celebration of the senses. The person who experiences Baby Bonk, should afterwards re-sort himself, or his CD collection. (Wolf Kampmann)

Wolfgang Maiwald
Thursday Sept. 9 | 14:30h - 15:00h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Wolfgang Maiwald (Germany)- Modern Jazz

I listen to some of my favorite jazz pianists as pianists and to others as composers. Horace Silver`s piano playing, for example, while both instantly recognizable and influential, was shaped by and subservient to his compositional talents. Much the same can be said of Chick Corea or Keith Jarrett. Likewise, Wolfgang Maiwald`s playing is inseparable from his finely honed compositional skills. He has written a series of pieces that are consistent in their harmonic richness and satisfying forms. His melodies and progressions always have a sense of purpose and aren`t merely there as an excuse for flights of improvisation.

Christophe Schweizer Detected Orchestra plays Joe Zawinul (CH/D/RU/F) - Modern Jazz

Thursday Sept. 9 | 20:30h - 21:15h | frannz Club

Mystéfy (Germany) - Vocal Jazz

This German born Canadian resident is a true storyteller. After the highly acclaimed debut CD Spark Within, Mystéfy continues her musical journey with Me: Unpretentious, straight and very intimate are the songs she wrote for her new album. This doesn´t imply all tunes on Me are autobiographical - but it does mean that everything Mystéfy composes and sings about relates to her, and reflects impressions and experiences Mystéfy has shared and lived through. Stories happening in her world, mostly true, sometimes altered, exaggerated or told in a humorous fashion. Mystéfy is highly intuitive and sensitive to her surroundings and easily picks up vibes - this is why her lyrics are intense, her songs are touching yet still put the listener at ease. Mystéfy embraces what we humans are made of: She is close to our emotions.

Jazzinvaders

Thursday Sept. 9 | 21.30h - 22.15h | frannz Club
Dutch Nu Jazz Movement

The Jazzinvaders (Netherlands) - Groove Jazz

Club credibility comes from years of inspiration and hard work and Phil Martin, the creative captain of the Jazzinvaders (and Socialbeats Records), knows exactly how to get there. From his musical vision, the Jazzinvaders have already reached and touched so many musical lovers globally, from those who dare to go beyond everyday club scenes, to those who look beyond the spectrum of jazz aficionados. Today, the Jazzinvaders are spreading their message even stronger. Most of the members are top notch, multi-awarded jazz-soloists, but with the Jazzinvaders they deliver their strongest work to date. Since the beginning, also the role of the computer as an extra and variable band voice, falls more and more into place now, with jazz-like parameters like dynamics and all the improvisation that happens on the spot. Ultimately, the Jazzinvaders should be experienced raw and fresh, on a club date or festival.

Thursday Sept. 9 | 22.30h - 23.15h | frannz Club
Dutch Nu Jazz Movement

State of Monc (Netherlands) - Groove Jazz

State Of Monc combines acoustic instruments and electronic breakbeats to create an exciting and very danceable mix of "nu jazz". The seven-strong band from Amsterdam/Rotterdam was formed in 2000 by trumpet player Arthur Flink and soundsmith/beat-maker Hielke Praagman. From the very beginning, the aim was to fuse together complex, impassioned jazz with adventurous, dance-rooted electronics. With their unique and innovative sound and their striking position within the band collective The Dutch Nu-Jazz Movement, State Of Monc puts the Netherlands firmly on the map of the future of jazz. The dynamic and tight music produced by State Of Monc will surprise you time and again. Their search for the perfect balance between electronic beats and sounds, brass instrumentation and acoustic bass and drums opens up more and more new roads and appeals to fans of jazz, dance and experimental music. The warm sounds of the bass and the sometimes drawling, cool yet predominantly staccato and funky brass and wind instruments are successfully married together with the robust sound and drum programming of the computer. All the possibilities within this search for man-and-machine-created music are used to their maximum potential by State Of Monc. "Germany has Jazzanova, France has St. Germain, and we, we have State of Monc."OOR (Geert Jan Jacobs)

Shuffle Demons
Friday Sept. 10 | 14:00h - 14:30h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Lena Sundermeyer (Germany)- Vocal Jazz

(Translation soon) Im Mittelpunkt der Band steht die Sängerin und Songwriterin Lena Sundermeyer.

Marko Jovanovic
Friday Sept. 10 | 14:30h - 15:00h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Marko Jovanovic & Piaccordia(Serbia/Germany) - Tango Nuevo, Nouvelle Musette, World Jazz

Edgar Knecht
Friday Sept. 10 | 16:30h-17:00h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Edgar Knecht (Germany) - Modern Jazz

A virtuoso of the piano keys takes on the declining teutonic folk song, and breathes new life into these songs with jazz and world music influences. The pianist and composer Edgar Knecht has managed to find a sensational new approach to the seemingly lost tradition "Maria durch ein Dornwald ging" becomes a ballad that gets under the skin. The song "Es war ein König in Thule" evolves into a virtuoso piece between Beethoven and Cuban salsa. In "Froh zu sein bedarf es wenig" African 6/8 beat and German 3/4 beat revel in a joyous celebration.

Oy by Andy Zant
Friday Sept. 10 | 17:00h - 17:30h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Oy (aka Joy Frempong) (Ghana/Deutschland) - Vocal Jazz Pop

Her first holler was heard in Bolgatanga, Ghana in 1978. Ever since, Oy (aka Joy Frempong) has moved around in space and sound, and taken part in many different musical entities. She is currently performing with several bands - electronic, jazz, hip-hop - such as Lauschangriff, Infinite Livez vs Stade, Filewile, Phall Fatale, and has collaborated with quite a few 'old cat' improvisational musicians. Thoroughly conviced by her vocal skills, Creaked gave her a free pass to create an album of her own. Joy completed a long-simmering project based on childhood memories, which had started out as entirely vocal outline and grew into the debut of the artist Oy. Drawing upon jazz, electronica and improvisation, Oy creates a matchless chemistry made up of kiddy-toy sounds, scraps of hip-hop, and various paeans of scat. She brings&xnbsp; an intense inner performance on stage, an alchemy of naïve innocence and solemn depth.

Savio Rego
Friday Sept. 10 | 17:30h - 18:00h | Friseur Tempelhof Airport

Savio Rego (USA) - Groove Jazz

LoZee
Friday Sept. 10 | 19.30h - 20.15h | frannz Club

LoZee (Deutschland) - Pop Jazz

(Translation soon) LoZee mit seinen vierzehn Songs seines Debutalbums Tell it to the sea entführt uns in eine Welt der Hoffnungen, der friedlichen Melancholie eines Sonnenuntergangs und des plötzlichen Sinnierens über den blauen Planeten.

Duo Èlegance: Peter Weniger (Germany) & David Friedman (USA) - Modern Jazz

In the course of their musical partnership, David Friedman and Peter Weniger have developed a kind of intuitive and interactive sense and a love for spontaneous music making. As a result they decided to go into the studio without any preparation or pre-conceived concepts. They used compositions drawn from the great american songbook as a kind of loose framework and turned these pieces into "on the spot", intimate musical landscapes.
